Today I came across this blog on droolicious discussing a post from yesterday about a bag by Dwell, not going to post a photo because I don't really like it -- OK, I will it's not really that bad it's just not my style:
"Our post from yesterday about a new Dwell diaper bag we're digging found Babble commenter Nolasmom raising an interesting question: We're always telling you about the most awesomest, coolest-looking new diaper bags, but really, aren't all these bags just expensive variations on the same generic tote with garish print?"
GASP!
They must not have heard of brands like Rafe, Not Rational, Mia Bossi, Ramalama, Nest, even Oi Oi and Lexie Barnes. I feel like going to meet the blogger and putting my arm around their shoulders and taking them to a really nice boutique with all of the NON-diaper bag looking diaper bags that are on the market today. It's true there are quite a few people who can't afford an expensive bag (however groups like babybags, even eBay and craiglist can facilitate some really great buys) and not everyone needs the functionality but how happy would they be after they tried out one of the newer styled bags? I have to admit that I am a complete bag snob however so this is only my opinion.
I had to post a response (and I almost never comment on other blogs unless it really moves me). Holy Moly, I couldn't help myself. So this is what Droolicious had to say (which looks like a cool blog site by the way, worth checking out):
"most diaper bags aimed at modern parents seem to follow one of three stylistic variations: the tote, the messenger bag/man-purse, or the modified backpack." Ay-yi-yi! It's not so simple anymore. Diaper bags have gotten so sophisticated and I felt I needed to stand up for all of the newer bag manufacturers.
Options today are endless! Sippie cups on the outside or on the inside, stroller straps or not, do you need a convertible bag, strap length, strap type, fabric (yummy soft TDF leather?), wristlet style, do you need a mommy pocket, perhaps you only need a small toddler tote? I could go on and on. IMO all diaper bags that match your babies jammies should be banned. The hospital diaper bags are a nice gesture and good for some uses but not for everyday!
Well, I hope some of the readers make it over here and find some of the information we have useful. It's not just a diaper bag, it's a life support system!

Hello! I'm the droolicious blogger you wish to console -- thanks for the post, and I must say, you've introduced me to a whole new world of bags I scarcely knew existed! That noted, I think you missed the point of my post -- the question about "Aren't all those bags just garish blah blah" was actually me paraphrasing a comment from one of our readers, and the point of the thing was to show that reader what a horribly generic 'regular diaper bag' looks like. Anyway, sounds like I need to work on my comic timing... Thanks for the feedback, though -- your blog is awesome, and I'll be back to check it out!
LOL. Not console necessarily - just take you shopping because I thought you might like what I would show you. Yes, I was at first referring to your reader's comment (I should have mentioned that you were paraphrasing) and then to your comment about the three different types of bag. What's really true is that SO many people do not know about the new bags that are out there and how their functionality can truly help make their running around a bit easier. I also should have mentioned that you were paraphrasing. delicious has reviewed some great bags, I went through them after I wrote this. I must also admit that I still have a lot to learn about the new diaper bags and what else is out there, I feel like I've just begun discovering and I'm having a blast.
OOPS, I meant droolicious...
LOL -- and no harm done. I linked back to you in the post. Thanks for the fun conversation, and keep up the awesome work here!
Cute bag!
